The Kick He Could Not Hold

Eli wanted his right leg to stay still. At breakfast his brother had called him jumpy, and the word had followed him to school. Mrs. Okonkwo, the nurse, was near the end of his check. She had listened to his chest and looked at his throat. A small rubber hammer lay on the tray. Eli decided what a good result would look like. Nothing at all. No jump, and no new story for his brother. A body that did what it was told.

"Sit on the edge," she said. "Let the foot hang. Don't help me."

He sat and let the foot hang. Then he tightened his thigh, just in case. She tapped just under the kneecap. The lower leg shot forward. The foot swung and came back. The movement was small. His face went hot anyway.
