Nina Wants the Ball In
Nina stands on a public court, behind the back line. A net cuts the court in two. Omar is on the other side with a yellow ball. No one else is on their court. Nina wants one thing. She wants her ball to go over the net and come down inside the white lines on his side.
Her racket feels big in her hand. The grip is damp. She can see the lines, and she can see the white band on top of the net. Omar bounces the ball and hits it to her. The ball comes in slow and high. Nina is quick. She swings too early. The racket meets the ball far in front of her body, and the ball flies long. It goes past the back line on Omar's side and does not touch his court.
