Elias Wanted the Far Rail
Elias stood at the edge of an outdoor rink, with both hands on the rail. His skates were on. His sister Imani was at the far side, and her red hat was easy to see. He wanted to skate to her. He did not want her to come and pull him. He wanted to cross the ice on his own feet.
The skates felt tall. When he stood up straight, his feet slid apart. He held the rail harder. People in winter coats moved around the rink. A small boy went past with his hands in his pockets, easy and quick. Elias let go. He took a step. The skate shot forward, his body stayed back, and he sat down. The ice was cold through his trousers. A glove almost came off. He pulled it back on.
