Priya is in the dark cinema with an empty seat beside her , and the advertisements are already playing . Her grandfather asked her to come with him . He has not been to a cinema for a long time , and he wanted someone next to him if the story moved too fast . She has his ticket in her hand . He is not in the building yet . A neighbor was going to drive him , but the car would not start . Priya knows this because her grandfather sent a short message : " On our way . Please hold the seat . " She looks at the empty place , then at the doors at the back . If he misses the beginning , the rest of the film will be hard for him . She did not buy these tickets so he could walk in halfway through . She gets up and walks to the usher by the doors . The usher has a small lamp . " Can he still come in ? " Priya asks . " This seat is for my grandfather . The car was late , and he is on his way now . He needs to see the film from the start . " The usher looks at the screen . A loud advertisement for a cold drink is playing . " These ads will run a little longer , " she says . " If he arrives before the film itself , I can let him in . After the film starts , these doors stay closed . " " I will watch for him , " Priya says . " Keep his ticket ready , " the usher says . " Sit on the aisle , so he does not have to climb past people in the dark . " Priya goes back . She takes the aisle seat and leaves the next one empty . She puts his ticket on her knee , where her hand can find it . The advertisement changes . People around her laugh at a joke on the screen . She does not laugh . She watches the line of light under the doors . A man in the row behind leans forward . " Is someone sitting there ? " " Yes , " Priya says . " My grandfather . He is coming . " The man nods and sits back . She does not want to give the seat away . The drink advertisement ends . The screen goes bright , then dark . Priya holds her own ticket tightly . Then the doors open a little . The usher's lamp shows an old coat and a hat she knows . Her grandfather steps in , slow and careful , and blinks at the dark . Priya stands so he can see her . She holds his ticket up . The usher points to their row . He comes down the aisle and sits beside her as the film begins . He puts his hand on hers .
