Oscar stands in front of a glass case with his hands in his pockets . Inside the case , a very old book lies open to one page . His sister Mara says one line from Shakespeare every night while she washes the dishes . Tomorrow she says it on a stage . At breakfast she pushed her plate away and asked him , " Will you look ? I need to know my line is really in the old book . " He came to the library after school . A rope keeps visitors back , so from where he stands the page is only a dark block of letters . He tries to read one word . He cannot . A man with a backpack stops , looks for a moment , and walks on . Oscar stays . Tonight Mara will ask what he saw , and " a big old book " is not an answer she can use . The book is Shakespeare's First Folio . After Shakespeare died , actors who had worked with him helped put many of his plays into this one big book . Some of those plays had not been printed before this book . Oscar heard that from Mara . He did not come to repeat it to anyone . He came because she is nervous , and a guess will not help her . He walks over to the woman at the desk . " Can I read one line ? " he asks . " My sister says it in her play . I will keep my hands off the glass . I only need to see if this open page has her words . " The woman looks at the book , then at his face . " Tell me the line , " she says . " You may stand at the glass . Hands behind your back . If the line is on this page , you will see it . I will not turn to another page . We only show the page that is already open . " " All right , " Oscar says . He steps past the rope when she nods . At the glass he says Mara's line softly , the way she says it over the dishes at home . The woman does not say it back . She points to the right page , near the middle . " There , " she says . " Read it yourself . " The letters are darker than the words on Mara's paper , and some of them look a little strange . Oscar reads slowly , so the old spelling does not trick him . His hands stay behind his back . The sentence on the page is the sentence she practices .
