Theo is already in his coat , and the only lantern left is the small one on the kitchen table . Tonight their street is full of lights . Neighbors have lamps in their windows , and someone is playing music at the corner . Theo told his friends he would carry a lantern down to that music . Their older cousin took the big lantern earlier and did not come back . If Theo walks out with empty hands , he will have to tell those friends he was wrong . Nina promised him . She said it this morning . She did not know their cousin would take the big one . Their mother stands by the door with the house keys . She looks at the small lantern , then at Theo's hopeful face , and she does not look convinced . The paper is thin . The stick is light . Theo swings things when he is excited . " He can carry it , " Nina says . " I will keep one hand on the stick the whole way . We will go to the corner , and then we will come back . He told his friends . I do not want him to walk down there and explain . " Their mother is quiet for a moment . She touches the paper . It bends under her finger . " All right , " she says . " Your hand stays on the stick . Only as far as the corner . If he starts to run , you take it back . I want this lantern home in one piece . " " Yes , " Nina says . Theo is already smiling , so she puts a finger to her lips . " Not yet . Coats , then the door . " Outside , the air smells like food from a table farther up the street . People talk on their steps . Theo holds the stick with both hands , low and careful . Nina's hand is above his . She feels every little pull . Twice he wants to lift the lantern high , to show a neighbor , and twice she says , " Low . We are not there yet . " They pass a window full of candles . Theo whispers the names of two friends . Nina does not hurry him , and she does not let the stick tip . At the corner the music is louder . A boy in a red hat sees them and waves . " You brought it , " the boy says . Theo lifts the lantern a little , only as high as Nina's hand allows . The paper glows .
