The Blue Sari

Priya stood in her room with a long blue cloth in both hands. Her friend Meera was getting married that afternoon, and Priya wanted to wear the sari her mother sent from home. The box came yesterday. Priya opened it on the bed, touched the gold border, and smiled. Then she stopped. She did not know how to put a sari on by herself.

The clock by the door told her to leave soon. The bus to the hall was not going to wait. Her shoes stood by the wall. Her bag was packed. The sari was still only a cloth.

She put one end at her waist and turned in a slow circle, the way her mother did in old photos. The cloth slipped and fell on the rug. Priya picked it up and tried again.
