The Word on the Sign

Mina got to the market while the shutters were still down, because the sign on her table was wrong and the doors would open soon. Ben, who sold bread at the next table, had written it for her the night before. He had wanted to help. The card said "exotic sour plums" in thick marker, with her own name for them squeezed underneath in smaller letters.

She wanted the card to say what her mother called them. She did not want a joke, and she did not want people to blush at the word.

"You're early," Ben said. He was stacking loaves. "I can redo it. I thought people would be curious."

"Curious is fine," Mina said. She held up the card. "This word is not. It makes them sound like a trick."

He looked at it and winced.
