The Ocean's Secret Weapon: Tiny Bacteria Turning CO2 into Stone
Nia held the flask up to the lamp. The seawater looked ordinary, a little cloudy, nothing like a headline. She had taken it from the cold room because the first result had seemed too neat, and she wanted to find the mistake before anyone else did.
The notes did not show a mistake. Some bacteria in the sample were taking dissolved carbon dioxide from the water and helping turn it into solid mineral.
"Don't write weapon," said Omar, from the next bench. "Write what happened."
Nia wanted one clean line for the lab book. The line kept breaking into conditions.
Carbon dioxide is not only in the air. Large amounts of it move between the air and the ocean. When it dissolves in seawater, it becomes part of a chemical system that is already busy.
