Not Just London: 5 English Cities to Explore
Owen wanted Liverpool. He had the reason ready. The Beatles had played at the Cavern Club, and the docks were still there to walk. His sister Ruth wanted Bath. She wanted the hot water under the city, the baths the Romans had built about two thousand years ago. They stood in a London station with one free weekend, one pair of train tickets, and a note from their mother.
The note had five names. Oxford, Liverpool, Bath, Brighton, and Manchester. Not London. Under Oxford their mother had written, "old university, about an hour from London if you go another day." Under Brighton, "a pebble beach, a pier, and a palace with a shape taken from Indian buildings." Under Manchester, "two big football clubs, United and City, and a town hall on Albert Square." Liverpool and Bath had no extra lines.
