The Bun and the Phone
Nora wanted the last almond bun. The woman behind the counter was already closing the shop, and Nora's bank card was still on the kitchen table at home. She had the phone in her coat. That would have to pay.
A digital wallet is an app that keeps a card on your phone. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay all work this way. Nora had added her card in the app, and the bank had approved it. After that, the card lived in the phone. She did not need the plastic for a shop that could read it.
At the counter she held the phone near the payment terminal. The phone and the terminal talk across a very short gap, with no cable. A small mark on the machine means it takes this kind of payment.
