The Phone Case from the Printer

Lena's phone case cracked on the bus. A corner split open, and the phone slipped in her bag. She wanted a new case before the end of the day, and she wanted her name on it. A shop near her house sold plain cases. None of them carried her name.

She already had a digital model on her laptop. A friend made it for her exact phone and raised the letters of her name on the back of the model. Lena took the laptop to the workshop at her college. A 3D printer stood on a metal table. She opened the file and looked at the model on the screen. The holes for the camera and the buttons sat where her phone needed them.

A program sliced the model into many thin layers. Each layer was one flat shape.
