Can't Talk
Leah's sister lives in another country. They had a call planned for the early evening, the hour that worked for both of them. Leah wanted that call. It was the one hour in the week when she heard her sister's voice, not only a line of text.
At the station, the board changed. Her train was cancelled. The next one would make her late. She opened WhatsApp and typed three words: Can't talk. She sent them and walked to the platform for the later train.
On that train she looked at the screen. Her sister had answered with one word: Fine. No question. No joke. Leah knew that Fine. It was the word her sister used when she was hurt and did not want to show it. Can't talk can mean I will explain in a minute, or it can mean leave me alone.
