The Line He Could Not Change
Omar wanted to send money to his sister Leila. She lived in another country. The last time he sent money through a friend, the friend said it had arrived, and Leila said it had not. Omar wanted a record that both of them could see, and that neither of them could quietly change. He did not want a bank keeping the only copy. He sent her some Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a digital currency people can send to each other, and its network started in 2009.
Bitcoin keeps payments on a blockchain. A blockchain is a shared list. The list is cut into blocks, and each new block is linked to the one before it. Many computers around the world keep a copy. When Omar's payment was accepted, it went into a new block. Leila opened the same list on her phone.
