The Nap She Could Not Take

Mara has two hours left in the passenger seat, and she wants her brother to rest his eyes. The car is holding the lane and the gap to the truck ahead. His hands rest lightly on the wheel. She tells him to sleep for a few minutes. He does not look over.

The car can steer and manage speed at the same time. That help is real, and he is still the driver. He has to watch, and he has to be ready to take the wheel back. Some services do carry people with no one driving, but only inside a limited area, on roads they are prepared for. This car is not one of those. It will help him on this highway. It will not take his place.

She asks what it can see.
