The Arm Without a Cage
Jonah wants to stay next to the work. The same reach, tray after tray of light glass vials, has worn his shoulder out, and he wants that reach taken from him. He also wants to remain in the spot. The next tray is sometimes cracked, and a person still has to see that.
Across the aisle a welding robot lives inside a cage. It joins metal, and nobody walks into its reach. Car plants were among the first to put robots like that on a line, and the shape is still common: a hard repeated job, and a fence. Jonah can watch the weld through a screen. He cannot put a hand in.
The arm beside him is a different kind of machine. People call it a cobot, built to share space with a person.
