The Power the Hill Can Give

Mara wants the old mill house to stay lit when the road floods and the main line goes down. The building sits above a fast stream, under a long roof, with wind on the ridge. She has one afternoon with an engineer, and the neighbours will vote on whatever she brings back.

They start with the roof. Photovoltaic cells turn sunlight straight into electricity. Panels can sit on a roof, in a field, or be built into the materials of a building, and this roof is wide and clear. On a bright day it could run the lights, the pump, and the workshop. Sunlight fails at night and thins under cloud, so something has to hold what the day makes. Lithium-ion batteries are a common way to store that electricity. They keep power.
