The Coat on the Chair

Nora lives in a small town in Vermont, and she wants one long walk before the day ends. It is autumn. The leaves are yellow on the trees and brown on the path, and this morning the sky is a clear blue. She puts on a light shirt and looks at her coat on the chair. The coat is heavy. The sun is warm on the window. She leaves the coat where it is and goes out with only her keys.

The park is bright. Children run on the grass. A dog shakes water from an old puddle, but Nora does not think about the puddle. She wants to reach the far trees, the ones that are still full of yellow leaves, and stand under them. She walks fast. She does not want to miss this light.
