Meeting New People
Marta wants one thing on her first evening in Edinburgh. She wants a person to walk with her to Arthur's Seat in the morning. People walk up the hill, but she does not want to go alone. The shared kitchen downstairs is the only place with light and voices.
She puts water in a pot for pasta. The water is still cold. At the other end of the table, a young man is cutting a large loaf of bread. He looks at the pot, then at her face.
"Is that dinner for one?" he asks.
"Yes," Marta says. "This is my first night here. I do not know anyone in the city."
"I am Tom. I arrived yesterday on the bus from London. I bought too much bread. Do you want some?"
Marta wants the bread, and she wants the conversation more.
