Emergency Situations
Ben wants one thing, and he wants it now. His friend Lara is on the floor of their hotel room in Madrid, and she cannot stand up. Her face is pale. She says the room is moving. Ben wants a doctor. He does not know the number to call, and the right word is not in his small phrase book.
He opens the door. "Please help," he calls. "My friend is sick."
Elena, the receptionist, comes up the stairs at once. She looks at Lara, then at Ben. "Do not try to lift her. I will call with you." She puts a pillow under Lara's head and leaves the door open.
They go to the phone at the front desk. Elena dials 112. In Spain, that number is for police, fire, and medical help. She turns on the speaker so Ben can hear every question.
