The Call After Italy
I got home late, and the phone rang before I put my bag down. It was my friend Nora. She had a short time before work, and she wanted the whole trip. I wanted her to stay on the line. One city was still in my head, and I did not want to spend that time on a list of names.
"Start at the beginning," she said.
I started in Rome. I walked through old streets and stood near ancient ruins. The stone felt warm in the sun. I told her about a huge old building with arches, the Colosseum, and about churches with high ceilings. That night I ate pizza. It was simple, hot, and very good. I felt excited, and I also felt tired from so much walking. Nora laughed. "That sounds like you," she said.
