Cultural Immersion Through Local Cuisine

Mara stood at the corner and watched two doors. On the left, a bright restaurant showed photos of the same burgers she could order at home. On the right, a narrow room was already full, and nobody inside was looking at a phone for a translation. She had come to this city because she wanted to eat the way people here ate. The bright door was easy. She chose the narrow one.

Inside, the air was warm with oil, herbs, and something sharp she could not name. A woman behind the counter looked up. A board on the wall was written by hand, and Mara could not read a single line. Her face went hot. Then the woman tapped one line with a spoon and said the name of the dish slowly, once, and then again.
