Geopolitical Impact on International Travel
Nadia wanted one thing a form could not promise: to read her paper aloud, in a city inside the Schengen Area. The invitation was already in her bag. The hotel could be cancelled. The passport in the drawer belonged to a country whose citizens still need a visa to enter that area.
She set the consulate page beside the kettle. It did not mention her research. It listed documents, a wait that might grow longer, and a fee she refused to copy into her notes. Amounts change, and the screen would name the one she had to pay. What she did understand was the quiet sorting behind every such list. States make a visit simple when they want each other's people, and slow when they do not. A complete file can still wait for a reason that has nothing to do with the abstract.
