The Toast Before the Inbox
Maya wanted one quiet hour at her desk before the office filled with voices. An email from yesterday was still waiting, and she wanted to answer it while the room was still empty.
She left the flat without breakfast. The bus would not wait, and the bread was still in the bag. On the stairs she remembered the old meaning of the word. Breakfast is break and fast: the meal that ends a night without food. This morning she broke nothing. She locked the door and ran.
The bus came full. It was the rush hour, the busy time when many people are going to work. They stood close, with bags against their knees. Maya held the rail and watched the streets in the early light. She did not open her phone. The email could wait until she had a chair and a quiet screen.
