The Call Before the Lift

Rosa wanted an answer before her manager left the building. A delivery was at the door. Someone had to say yes or no, and her manager was already on his way out.

The phone rang while she was still writing the morning list. She picked it up. "Good morning. This is Rosa. How can I help you?"

"I need your manager," a woman said. "The boxes are here. The driver will not leave them. He needs a yes."

"May I have your name, please?" Rosa asked.

"Helen," the woman said.

Rosa wrote Helen on the pad. "Thank you. I will put you on hold and call him now."

She put the call on hold and rang her manager, Mr Adeyemi. His line was busy. She looked up from the desk. He was already in his coat, a folder under his arm, walking to the lift.
