The Spare White Shirt

Farah wanted a clean shirt before the visitor sat down. The drawings were ready on the table. Her blouse was not ready at all.

She was careful all morning. She wore a neat blouse, dark trousers, and black shoes. Before she left her desk, she wiped a pale mark off one shoe with a tissue. Then she went to the kitchen for tea. At the door on the way back, the cup hit her elbow. Tea ran down the front of the blouse. A brown patch spread across the cloth, warm against her stomach.

She stood in the corridor and looked down. The visitor was coming soon. She could not sit at that table and talk about the drawings with tea all over her front.

Jonah came out of the copy room with a stack of paper.
