The Part in the Case
Elias stood under the station board with a small hard case in his hand. Inside it was the spare part a clinic had asked for, and the clinic opened that morning. The board changed while he watched. His train was cancelled. The next one was too late for the nurse who was waiting.
He wanted one thing: to put that case on the clinic desk before the first patient sat down. A long taxi could still do it. He turned toward the line of taxis, and then his phone buzzed.
It was Marta, from the same company. She was already driving to that town for a different visit. She had one empty seat. "I can pass the station," she wrote. "Side door, not the main hall. I cannot wait long. The traffic after the bridge gets slow."
