The Sandwich with Two Names

Nina was behind the lunch counter when Mr Adeyemi came in. He usually smiled and pointed at the board. That morning he looked at the board, then at her, and he did not smile.

"Where is the chicken roll?" he said. "I get it every time I come here. I have to be back at my desk soon, and I don't want a surprise on my plate."

Nina wanted two things. She wanted him to leave with the lunch he liked. She also wanted the people waiting in the line to hear a short, clear answer, not a long story about the menu.

"We still make it," she said. "Look at the words garden chicken wrap. That's your roll. Same bread, same chicken, still no onion. Only the name on the card is new."

He did not look sure.
