The Smaller Bowl

Priya stood at the steel counter with a knife in her hand. A ripe melon sat on the board, and the lunch trays were still empty. The director was bringing visitors. She wanted every tray on the counter before anyone sat down.

Fruit was Sam's job. He was not there. He was in the storeroom, looking for clean plates, because the usual plates were still in the dishwasher. Priya could hear the machine through the wall. It hummed and did not stop.

She started to cut. The melon was soft, and the knife slipped. A thick piece fell on the floor. She picked it up, threw it away, and cut more slowly. Juice ran to her elbow. She wiped it on her apron and kept the knife moving.

Sam came in with a tall stack of plates.
