The Garden Room
The lift was stuck between floors, and the light above the doors was red. Nobody was inside. Paul, the night manager, already had the repair company on the line. Noor stood at the desk with a key in her palm. Outside, a guest was coming up the steps, and a suitcase knocked on each one. She wanted that guest in a room before the lift became the whole evening.
The only ready room was on the ground floor, by the garden. Paul had been holding it for a late booking. Noor had taken that call herself. The caller had said they might not come. Paul kept the room locked in his book anyway.
"Tell them to wait in the lobby," he said, the phone still at his ear. "We do not give away a held room because a lift is slow."
