Later, Still Warm

Rafi stood in the cafe doorway with a crate of bread and a sorry ready in his mouth. Lila, the owner, looked at the empty basket by the till. "Late again," she said. "My first customers asked for toast and I had nothing warm to give them."

He wanted to keep her order. To do that, he needed her to hear one clear fact before another empty sorry. In the van he practiced the soft version. Traffic was bad. The oven was slow. He was doing his best.

Lila waited. She did not look ready for a soft speech.

Rafi put the crate down. Next to the empty basket, the practiced words sounded weak. "If I say sorry again, you still do not know when the bread comes," he said. "So I am going to ask you to choose."
