The Stair That Stops Short

Noor heard the printer before she saw Ellis. He came in with a roll of paper under his arm and the look of a man who has already decided. Outside, the street was bright and empty. On the side table, the school model still had a stair that stopped short of the landing.

She wanted that stair to meet. The school job had waited through every other offer they took to keep busy. If this new sheet became the winter, the landing would still be wrong when the children needed the door.

Ellis spread the drawing on her desk. A shop front, a lot of glass, a clean strip where a sign could go. The kind of work they could finish without a fight. "They want us soon," he said. "The school can sit. Nothing has started on site."
