The Form She Did Not Sign

Mrs Pell put her phone on Hugo's desk with the screen still lit. A message from her nephew sat there, full of excitement and almost no detail. "He says we have to move today," she said. "If I wait, I miss it. I want you to put the money in."

Hugo wanted her to leave with the money still somewhere she could explain. He had watched other people arrive like this, bright with someone else's certainty, and he had learned not to borrow it. He turned the phone face down.

"Tell me what the company does," he said. "Not his words. Yours."

She blinked. "They are the ones everyone is talking about. He showed me a chart in a cafe. The line went up. He said his friend already got in."

"That is what he saw," Hugo said.
