The Question in the Book
Ruth heard the car door and knew Victor had already talked. He came up the stairs with his son behind him, both of them looking as if the matter was already closed. The rooms over the shop were full of boxes. Victor wanted those rooms for the boy. He had told Ruth that morning, out by the bins, as if the other owner were a detail.
She wanted the decision made in the room. When Samir bought in, they agreed the building was not a father's gift to give away beside the rubbish. If Victor could hand the rooms over before the meeting, the agreement was only words they used when it was easy.
Samir was already at the table. He had the storage key in his hand, the way he held it on delivery days.
