Before the Monday Note
Priya wanted one sentence gone before Chris hit send.
The Monday note was still a draft. Under the greeting he had written that the team was a family, and that families stay late for each other. Maya had told Priya she was leaving. She had not told Chris. What had worn Maya down was a customer complaint that nobody owned. The customer had been promised a call back, had written in a calm tone, and had written again without the calm. The complaint slipped from inbox to inbox while the meetings stayed warm and vague. Maya had asked for a name on it. Priya could already hear how the note would land. The request would sound like a failure to be grateful.
Priya stopped at his desk. Somewhere behind them a kettle clicked off. Someone laughed at a joke she did not catch.
