Lena Keeps the Notebook Shut
Lena Ortiz wanted the notebook back in the bag before anyone in the room treated it as a sample. The startup had come for a licence. Dr. Alan Reeves had come ready to explain, and explaining, for him, meant opening the book.
They sat in a small room off the transfer office. Ruth Keller, counsel for the company, had a draft on her side of the table that nobody had signed. Alan kept the notebook under his hand, the way a person holds a thing they are proud of. Ruth smiled and said her engineers only needed to see how the method worked, so they could tell the board it was real. Lena had heard that friendly request before. She did not believe a look stayed a look. Once those pages crossed the table, the office would no longer know who had seen them.
