Claire Stops the Reply
Claire Dunne wanted the reply deleted before Tom Adeyemi sent a courtesy that would keep the thread alive. A rival's sales lead had written to him that morning. The note was short. It suggested they stop undercutting each other on the harbour job.
Tom had already drafted an answer. It was polite. It said his company priced its own work, wished the rival well, and would not discuss bids. He thought the politeness made it safe. He had come to Claire's office so she could bless the wording, because he did not want to look rude and he did not want to look careless. Claire read the incoming note, then the draft. She did not want his kindness adding another line to a chain about price.
She wanted nothing sent. Not a sharper refusal, and not a joke that pretended the note had been a misunderstanding.
