Maya Cuts the Comfort Line

Maya Ellison wanted the staff note stopped while it still said that nothing would change. Owen Briggs, the founder, had written it after the advisers came in. He wanted it out before the workshop heard a rumour from a supplier.

They stood in the small room beside the floor, the door not quite shut. Outside, a machine was still running. Owen kept glancing toward the sound as if it proved his line. Maya did not look with him. Owen's draft was on his phone. It thanked people for their patience, said the company was talking to advisers as a precaution, and ended on the line he liked: everyone here is safe. Maya had watched that kind of line travel. People repeated it. She did not believe he could stand behind it once a restructuring had begun.
