The Envelope Mira Would Not Take

Mira Shah wanted one thing from the licensing office: a warehouse permit in her company's name, earned in the ordinary queue. The containers were already spoken for, the landlord was already looking past her, and a man named Ade had come with a faster idea.

He set a plain envelope on the blotter.

"This is not a bribe," he said. "It is a small kindness so a clerk looks at your papers this season instead of the next. I will not tell you which desk. I will not give you a receipt. You will only know that the file moved."

Mira left her hands in her lap. She had opened this office so the company could store goods near the port, and she wanted that plan to survive a lawyer as well as a rainy road.
