Lena Waits for Clear Water
Lena wanted one glass of water for her son, Sam, before school. His bag was by the door, the kitchen was already warm, and he was holding out his cup. She turned on the tap.
The first water came out light brown. It was not the water she wanted him to drink. She had seen this tap do the same thing on other mornings. She did not know why. She knew what mattered in her kitchen. She filled a cup only after the water looked clear. Brown water went into the sink.
Sam pushed the cup closer. "I am thirsty now."
"I know," she said. "This first water is for the sink. Your water comes next."
He frowned, because a thirsty child does not like to wait. Lena kept her hand on the tap. She could fill the cup at once and make him quiet.
