The Nest on the Step
Nina wanted the front step clear before the rain. Friends were coming later, and the step was the only way to the door. When she came up from the street, a small nest sat on the top step, right where a shoe lands. Twigs, dry grass, and a soft gray center. She stopped with her key in her hand.
She looked along the rail and up at the roof. No bird. The nest looked finished and quiet, something she could lift and set in a safer place. Rain was already in the air. If she left the nest there, a person might step on it. If she moved it under the roof, it might stay dry.
She put her bag inside and came back with a low box from the hall. She knelt on the lower step and slid one hand toward the nest.
