Maya and the High Note

Maya needed the high part of her flute tune to sit properly before the evening. A small group was meeting at the community hall, and she promised to play. In the flat, every time she reached those notes, the dog in the flat below started to bark, and she lost the line.

She warmed up first on the low, easy bars. Those were fine. The dog ignored them. The trouble started when the tune rose. Maya stood by the shut window, took a breath, and tried again. The first high note came out thin. The second was clearer. Then the bark hit the floor under her feet, sharp and close, and her fingers jumped off the keys. She stopped at once. The dog stopped too. The quiet after the noise felt strange, and her heart was still going fast.
