The Egg That Sank
Priya wanted the egg to float before Nabil lost interest. He was her nephew, and he sat at her kitchen table with his coat still on. On the walk back from the shop she told him she could make an egg float, and he asked to see it before his mother came to collect him. Now the egg lay at the bottom of a tall glass and did not move.
She shook in a little salt and stirred with a spoon. The water went cloudy for a moment, then cleared, and the egg stayed down. Nabil put his chin near the rim. "It is not doing it," he said. His eyes slid toward the doorway. In the next room the television was still talking, and it would be easy for him to leave. Priya felt hot in the face.
