The Toad in the Box
Leo wanted to show his sister the toad before dark. He had found it under wet leaves at the edge of the school pond, and he had slipped it into his lunch box while the yard was empty. The box had no food in it, but it was dry, and the lid shut tight. On the bus he held it on his knees. He could already see his sister's face when he opened it on the kitchen table.
The bus was warm. When it stopped, he lifted the lid a little. The toad had pushed itself into a corner. Its skin looked dull, not like the wet shine it had under the leaves. Leo shut the lid at once. A boy across the aisle saw the movement and grinned. "Keep it in a tank," he said.
