Not Half a Face

Mina had promised her sister one thing for the lunch: do not let Uncle Pete turn the baby into a debate. Sam was asleep in a basket by the bread, and Pete had already started. "He has your hair, Dan," he said to the father. "I do not see Lila in that face at all. Sometimes the mother just does not show."

Lila looked at Mina. That look was the promise, asking to be kept.

The cousins were already leaning in, the way children do when an adult sounds sure. The plates were only half cleared. If Mina let the talk run, Sam would stay a puzzle for the rest of the afternoon.

Mina did not want a classroom in the middle of lunch. She wanted Pete to stop before the cousins made a game of it.
