The Seat the Tool Gave Away
Ruth wanted Mr. Pell's Thursday seat back under his name before he saw the screen. The community center had switched on a new tool for class places, and overnight it had given his wheel, the one by the window, to somebody Ruth had never met. Under the stranger's name sat a gray note: likely to miss. A line below said a confirmation had already gone out. Ruth knew the miss the tool was so sure about. His bus had failed once, and he had called her from the stop, apologizing as if a broken bus were a personal fault. He had come every other Thursday. Beginners waited for him. He stayed late to show them how to keep the clay centered, and he never made them feel slow.
Anita, who managed the center, came through with a box of clay and found Ruth standing at the desk.
