The Sentence on the Poster

Priya wanted one line that would stop people in the corridor. The open day was tomorrow, the poster was still a draft, and the only sentence with any heat in it was the one Dr. Lang had already crossed out: "It checks every possible answer at the same time." She had lifted it from a video, and it sounded like a machine with a secret. In the margin his pencil had left one word. No.

The rest of the hallway already knew how to please a crowd. Down the corridor a robot arm picked up cups and set them down, and people loved it because the trick was visible. Priya's machine sat behind glass and offered nothing to point at. She had volunteered to write the caption. She was not going to spend the day beside a sentence that sounded like a warning on a bottle.
