The Line Mara Would Not Sign

Mara kept her pen above the page and did not sign. The room had gone quiet in the way rooms do when a small sentence is about to become public. On the screen, the draft ended with a clean promise: the crew would land on Mars.

She wanted that line gone. She had not come in to stop the mission. She still took the night bus because she believed the work mattered. She wanted the public sentence to say only what this team could stand behind.

"Land is the wrong verb," she said.

Dean, who wrote the updates, looked tired rather than angry. "People need a picture. If we say we are still working on the landing, they hear that we have no plan."

"Then let them hear what the plan really is," Mara said.
