The Smooth Answer
Elias wanted the model to hesitate. In the morning a seminar would ask him the question he still could not make smaller: when a system says that it is in pain, what, if anything, has been settled? He did not want to arrive with only his own circling. He wanted a false start from the machine, a sentence that arrived and then chose a narrower claim, some sign that a word had been risked. He asked it once, and he took his hands off the keys.
The reply came in even paragraphs. They were polite, and they were willing to go on. He read them standing, one hand on the back of the chair, and felt the particular irritation of being helped too smoothly. The prose drew a line he himself trusted. Saying what a system does is one claim.
