Hands in the Box
Tom wants one real kick before the park gets dark. His cousin Mia has the ball under her arm. She walks on the grass and she does not put the ball down. The other children are already at home. Soon their mother will call them from the gate. If Tom does not kick the ball now, the two of them will go home with no game.
"Put the ball down," Tom says. "This is football. We kick the ball. We don't carry it in the middle of the game."
Mia stops next to the small goal. "Why?" she asks. "I can hold the ball. When I kick, I miss."
Tom looks at the empty net. A kick with nobody there is only a sound. He is in the park because he wants to play with Mia.
